The NV Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Quintessence du Pinot Noir is a beautiful, resonant wine with tons of Bouzy textural richness. Small red berry, dried herbs, crushed flowers and spice fill out the wine's frame effortlessly. Readers who enjoy Blanc de Noirs will find much to admire here. This is a terrific showing. All-Pinot Noir Champagne in the characterisitically plump, fleshy style of the Grand Cru village of Bouzy from which it comes. It has a flowing, creamy texture and biscuity richness, but finishes on a lingeringly refreshing, crisp, citrus note. A good Champagne for drinking with food, although it certainly doesn't need it. The Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru blossoms on the palate with an expansive core of perfumed fruit. This finely textured, silky wine possesses notable clarity and delineation in an understated yet pleasing style. The long, clean finish gives the wine a touch more freshness than the Brut Grand Cru Grande Reserve. This is a highly rewarding wine to enjoy over the next few years. Light, bright gold with a strong mousse. Citrus and pear aromas are underscored by subtle nuttiness, with dried flowers and honey adding complexity. Deep in orchard fruit flavors, with an element of lemon zest adding energy and lift. Definitely on the rich side, but there's also vivacity and balance. I very much like the complexity of the green apple, pear and white flower scents that are trimmed in toasty yeast elements that can also be found on the delicious and relatively full-bodied flavors that possess the same fine depth as communicated by the nose, all wrapped in a succulent and saliva-inducing finale. This is really quite good and while I wouldn't describe it as an elegant Champagne, if you enjoy full-flavored, indeed even robust, examples, this would be a good one to check out. Blanc de Noirs champagne, made in this case entirely from black-skinned Pinot Noir grapes, is one of the few sparklers that can wash down punchy festive fare and perk up jaded palates. Edmond Barnaut at Bouzy is a new name to me but his full-bodied bubbly from the grand cru vineyards of Bouzy are a joy, and his powerful blanc de Noirs is full of seductive ripe, waxy, winey fruit that will have plenty of admirers. When Edmond Barnaut married in 1874, he created this marque with his own and his wife's vineyards. Since 1985 the fifth generation has been in charge with Philippe Secondé making well-aged Champagnes (five years average for the Grande Réserve) which are very representative of the full-bodied style of Bouzy - the excellent Pinot Noir of the village's Grand Cru Vineyards providing the backbone (2/3) of the Grande Réserve and all of the Blanc de Noirs.
An in house favourite, Barnaut's Blanc de Noirs is also highly lauded by the wine critics. Perhaps the perfect Christmas sparkler. Simply gorgeous champagne - made entirely from the black grapes of Bouzy's best Grand Cru vineyards, it is a huge pleasure to drink - particularly at this time of year, the added weight and intensity here is satisfying and holds its own on a cool December evening, as the french say this is like an iron fist in a velvet glove - sleek and powerful.
